Brugge, located at the northwest corner of Belgium, has its historical city center as a prominent World heritage Site of UNESCO. It is sometimes referred to as "The Venice of the north".
The first fortifications for Brugge were built after Julius Caesar's conquest of the Menapii in the first century BC, to protect the coastal area against pirates. More walls and canals were constructed to protect the place from time to time. Brugge has most of its medieval architecture intact.
"Madonna and Child" is Michelangelo's only sculpture to have left Italy within his lifetime.
